How do I calculate the percentage of marks?

Divide the obtained marks by the total marks and multiply by 100. For example, 412 out of 500 is 412 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.4%. On the Pakistani board scale 82.4% is grade A1; the pass mark on boards is 33%, and many schools use 40%.

What is the formula for percentage of marks?

Percentage = (obtained marks ÷ total marks) × 100.

Example 1: 385 out of 550 → 385 ÷ 550 = 0.7, × 100 = 70%.

Example 2: 1,020 out of 1,100 (Matric) → 1,020 ÷ 1,100 = 0.9273, × 100 = 92.73%.

For several subjects, add all obtained marks and all total marks first, then use the same formula. Do not average the subject percentages if the subjects have different total marks — that gives the wrong answer.

What grade is my percentage in Pakistan?

Pakistani boards (BISE) give A1 from 80%, A from 70%, B from 60%, C from 50%, D from 40% and E from 33%. Below 33% is fail.

Schools set their own scale, so check your school’s policy. Switch the calculator between the board scale and the school scale to see both.

How many marks do I need for a target percentage?

Multiply the target percentage by the total marks and divide by 100, then round up. For 80% in 1,100 marks: 80 × 1,100 ÷ 100 = 880 marks.

Use the “Marks needed” mode to work this out for any target, such as the 33% passing marks in a 75-mark paper (25 marks).

How do teachers use a percentage calculator?

Teachers use it to check result cards, work out class test percentages and find the passing marks for a paper before marking.

  • Check the percentage and grade before writing the result card
  • Find the passing marks for a paper with odd total marks (e.g. 75 or 85)
  • See which subject pulls a student below the pass mark
  • Explain to parents how the percentage was worked out
